An unknown group of people attacked BJP President JP Nadda’s convoy with bricks and stones in West Bengal on Thursday. Sources allege that Trinamool Congress workers are behind the attack of the convoy, which also included other senior BJP members during their travel to Diamond Harbour for a party meeting. “If I have reached this meeting, it is because of Ma Durga,” Nadda said, adding that if senior party leaders are given such treatment, imagine the plight of party workers.
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has written to Home Minister Amit Shah on the incident, stating that there were serious security lapses and there was no presence of police at the event. Shah has ordered for a probe into the attack. A video showed stones being pelted on national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya’s car.
The BJP has strongly condemned the attack on Nadda and other BJP leaders. Shah condemned the incident via a tweet, adding that the Centre is taking this attack very seriously. “The Bengal government will have to answer to the peace-loving people of the state for this sponsored violence,” Shah said.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Union Ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and Piyush Goyal condemned the incident. “This is a deplorable incident. It demonstrates a complete breakdown of law and order in the state of West Bengal,” Goyal said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also condemned the attack on Nadda. In a tweet, Singh said that he had spoken to Nadda after the attack and got further details on the attack. “This incident is a reflection of the declining law and order in West Bengal. In a democracy, it is worrying that political leaders are targeted in this fashion. This incident should be investigated,” Singh said.
Nadda was on a two-day visit to West Bengal, as the state is getting ready for assembly elections next year.
