In what might be a very disturbing twist to the case, Karnataka police arrested the family for the death of their two-year-old child with physical disabilities. According to the official reports, the parents did so because they couldn’t handle the hospital expenses of the child, leading to killing the child “sparing it from further difficulties”.

Last week, the parents of Mahadevi informed the Ram Nagara police that their child was kidnapped and murdered after “discovering” her body in a borewell at a farm field near their home. The initial complaint was that someone had kidnapped their daughter. The investigation into the matter revealed new information that shocked everyone’s conscience.

According to reports, a source told the police that he saw the grandmother and great-grandmother of the child carrying her off on the day of the crime. He added that the child was missing when they returned. In the subsequent interrogation, the police learnt that the two ladies had killed the child on the instruction of Mahadevi’s parents. Following this, the parents confessed to the crime.

The parents — Manasa and Shankar, who both work in a chemical factory — said that the child couldn’t speak and couldn’t move her legs. According to them, the doctors had informed them that the monthly medical expense of the child would hit Rs 10,000, and they couldn’t handle such an amount. They added that they had killed the child to stop everyone’s suffering. The police have taken the parents, grandmother and great mother into custody.
