In a controversial turn of events, A UP BJP MLA has said that the Taj Mahal would be renamed Ram Mahal or Shiv Mahal. Bairia representative Surendra Singh sparked this new controversy, by claiming that the Taj Mahal had historically been a Shiva temple and thus will be turned into a temple again.

“If God wills, you will know right away whether it is the Taj Mahal or the Ram Mahal. Muslim invaders destroyed Indian culture in every possible way. However, Uttar Pradesh has reached a golden age. The Taj Mahal will be renamed s Ram Temple,” he said while speaking to media persons. Singh said that this change would be due to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath. The MLA added that Yogi Adityanath was a descendent of the Maratha warrior king Chatrapati Shivaji.

This is not the first time Singh has made such controversial remarks. Surendra Singh had earlier demanded that the Victoria Palace in Kolkata be renamed Janaki Palace. His remarks after the rape and murder of a Dalit girl in Hathras had also invited public outrage. He claimed that the government could not prevent rape by law and arms and it could only be done so by raising girls in a cultured manner.
